In 1921, DH Lawrence described Sardinia as “lost between Italy
and Africa and belonging to nowhere”; it lies pretty much
equidistant from the Italian mainland in one direction and about
the same from Tunisia in the other. Thanks to being one of the
least populated Italian regions, its environment remains unspoiled
and spectacular – but think past the amazing beaches and check out
the mysterious, rarely visited interior… no wonder the island is
riddled with tales of witchcraft and sorcery, a history that’s
mirrored in many of the colourful festivals for which the island is
known.
