Cardiff,
Considering it’s Europe’s youngest capital, Cardiff is surprisingly cosmopolitan, with a wealth of leisure and entertainment opportunities, especially around the newly slick Cardiff Bay development area. Football and rugby fans regularly descend upon Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, which also plays host to various international music acts – Oasis and Take That are recent appearances. For those with a taste for the older side of Caerdydd (Welsh for Cardiff) there are of course the castles (Cardiff Castle in the centre and Castell Coch on the outskirts), as well as several Victorian shopping arcades and the Butetown History and Arts Centre, while the 30,000+ student population lends the city a vibrant edge, with a lively pub and club scene.

Paddle-sporting in Cardiff Bay
Located just minutes from Cardiff’s city centre, Cardiff Bay plays host to watersports enthusiasts getting wet in a variety of ways – think kayaking, sailing, and windsurfing for starters. Try your hand (and work those shoulders) at paddle sporting, £55 for the day.

Norwegian Church
Small wonder that this religious landmark boasts a spectacular view over Cardiff’s waterfront: it was originally established as a place of worship for Norwegian sailors. Soak up the view – and get your caffeine fix while you’re at it – from the Konditori coffee shop, where you can also indulge in a Norwegian & Welsh cheese platter, which includes Jarlsberg, Westot and Y Fenni, alongside bread and chutney, for £5.95.

Best tourist must-see:
St Fagans National History Museum
Set in 100 acres of parkland, this open-air museum is worth a full day’s visit: it features buildings from all over Wales, which have been lovingly reconstructed, brick by brick. As well as a Victorian schoolroom and quarryman’s cottage, there’s an entire Celtic village including a bakery and village store, both of which are open for business. Best of all, there’s a vivid pink farmhouse, painted thus to scare off those pesky, livestock-thieving evil spirits.

Best authentic local cuisine:
Faggots at The Promised Land
Faggots are one of the unsung heroes of Welsh cuisine, so forget about snickering at the name and give these “savoury ducks”, as they’re sometimes called, a try – unless, that is, you’re a vegetarian. Made from offal, suet, breadcrumbs and herbs, faggots started life as lunch for miners and are usually served with chips and mushy peas. You’ll be able to sample them easily enough at a “chipper” (fast food shop), but to try them at their best, head to The Promised Land, where all of the food is locally sourced and freshly cooked to order. A plate of two faggots served with gravy, mushy peas and mash will set you back about £5.50.

By bus: The Airbus X91, X45 and 345 services operate between the airport and Cardiff city centre every 30 minutes, Monday to Saturday, between the hours of 06:53 and 18:58. Then every 60 minutes between 19:36 and 22:36. The X5 service operates hourly on Sundays between 08:15 and 21:35. Journey time to Cardiff from the airport is approximately 40 minutes.
