Pompeii and Herculaneum
Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79 and buried many towns including Pompeii and Herculaneum. The latter was rediscovered in 1709 and the resulting preservations following the many discoveries hidden beneath the pyroclastic mud flows make it one of the most conserved sites from this time. The more famous of the two; Pompeii is a larger city-town also destroyed by the devastation of Mount Vesuvius and not found again until 1749. The resulting excavation has led to many important discoveries in piecing together Roman life at that time.
